Guest Who’s Buying an Aspirin?

What’s with the cashiers at Duane Reade calling the customer “guest” all of a sudden? I’m not checking in for an overnight stay, am I?

I feel like a lot of retail chains have done that. What used to be the “next customer” (or just “next!”) is now “the following guest.” Who am I following? It doesn’t make them sound any more professional or make me feel any more welcome. In fact, it makes the cashiers appear less human and more robotic.

With the glacier like speed they use when waiting on people, it’s entirely possible.
