Tennis Stadium Update

August 6, 2010 Leave a comment

Michael Perlman, who is leading a grassroots campaign to save the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium from being demolished, sent me this article from the Queens Tribune in which he is quoted extensively: Cord Meyer Seeking To Develop Stadium

I take two things away from the article:

  1. The Landmark Preservation Committee is now considering Landmark Status for the stadium, which will prevent it from being destroyed and provide funding for its rehabilitation.
  2. Enemy Number One of Saving the Stadium:

    Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz

Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz. Every quote I have seen from her expresses approval of destroying this treasure in favor of thoughtless development.

Sitting Park Spruce-up – August 14th

August 6, 2010 Leave a comment

Posting this from one of my readers:

The NYC Parks Dept has approved the project to spruce up the triangle sitting park at 67th Av and Queens Blvd. It will take place on Saturday, August 14th from 9:00- 11:00. It’s a small project, nevertheless, our efforts will go a long way in bringing attention to the “park’s” inferior condition.
I need about 10 volunteers to help clean, paint, plant, and prune.
I know it’s the middle of summer, but you would be giving up just 1 or 2 hours of your time and making a big difference in our community.

Tools, gloves, and equipment will be provided.
Breakfast is on the house.
Book raffle will be held.
Wear old clothes.
If you need transportation to the site, let me know.

Free breakfast and raffle for a little sweat equity.
Hey, how simple and worthwhile does a community project get?!

I hope to meet some of you out there on the 14th.
Thanks.

It’s up to us!

Disgraceful

This makes me sick:

Boulevard of Death strikes again: 76-year-old man killed on Queens Boulevard

What a tragedy that we should still be mourning pedestrians killed simply trying to cross Queens Blvd!

Local politicians – it is criminal that you sit by and watch this continue to happen. As the article says, The Daily News monitored three random Queens Blvd. crossings and watched elderly residents have to run across just to make it in time. I am in my 40’s and I have to hurry across. It is disgraceful.

The walk signals allowed pedestrians plenty of time to cross up until about two years ago when overnight they were suddenly changed. Who made that decision?? You are out there somewhere. It didn’t just happen by itself. And you are putting residents’ lives at risk? Who the hell do you think you are?

Lengthen the damn walk signals and prevent further tragedies like these from occurring!

This is right next to the mini-mall on 71st Continental. We’re not sure yet what is being built there. Maybe a Bloomingdale’s? 🙂
