Lunchtime in the Hills
Just some stuff I noticed today during a nice walk around Forest Hills on this delightful Indian-Summerish day:
The empty space on 71st Continental, near Queens Blvd., is being filled by another optical store.

Oh, and one other thing…. what is with the Fay Da Bakery, over near the T-Bone Diner? I walked in there and it was P- A – C – K – E – D !!!!! Is the place that good? Just what have I been missing all these years?

Another optical store? Didn’t know the area needed another one.
Regarding Fay Da, that place is decent, but the prices are what really attracts people.
Fay Da is generally found in the Chinatowns (Manhattan or Flushing), so I was surprised when one came to Forest Hills.
Not sure if you ever been to a Chinese bakery before, but the offerings are quite different from what’s in the area. Chinese bakery offerings, while having some dessert/cream type items, generally revolve around pastries and bun varieties for breakfast/lunch/coffee break. They’re also not overly sweet like donuts or danishes – for example, I would consider the “roast pork bun” in the “savory” category.
All in all, I would recommend going in if you were looking to grabbing something as an alternate to a donut or danish, but not if you’re hankering to “treat” yourself to a slice of tiramisu or a cupcake.

Ray – I am getting more and more intrigued by these Chinatown bakeries – I had a great coconut shake in one of them in Chinatown (in Manhattan) recently, and even their egg rolls were really really good. I noticed the Fay Da while walking around Chinatown. I will have to give them a try soon. The line was sooo long in there today.
The Chinatown to visit is the one in Main Street/Flushing, which not only has the usual stores/vendors/Hong Kong style bistros you’d find in the Manhattan one, but I find their restaurants to be better. There’s also a variety of Chinese bakeries, so there might be different variations to try as well.
Big difference between the two is that the Manhattan Chinatown is mainly spoken Cantonese (more Hong Kong people), while Flushing Chinatown is mainly spoken Mandarin (Taiwanese/mainland China). Don’t worry, my Cantonese is kinda bad and Mandarin is nonexistent, so lots of pointing generally gets the idea across when needed :).
There’s also a Korean population is Flushing too, and currently one of my favorite cake shops is a Korean bakery located there (cakes are kinda in-between Chinese and Italian cakes – sweeter than the Chinese ones, but not as rich/heavy as the Italian ones).
For those considering visiting Fay Da, this is just a general warning, but Chinese desserts/pastries are not as sweet as western ones.

I love Fay Da. Their pastries are delicious and different from your typical bakery fare.
I agree with Rachel… Plus, they have steamed pork bus (Char Siu Bao) and rice in lotus leaves, and other dim sum treats for the palate, all day long! (Which can be a bad thing as sometimes they aren’t the freshest but…)
