In case you haven’t heard – Toys R Us is opening up a temporary store on Austin St. where the Annie Sez/ Mandee was. It is part of a strategy by the retailer to greatly expand its storefronts for the holidays: Toys R Us Plans a Pop-Up Store Holiday Blitz

I hope they have some funds to do something with the exterior, maybe some paint or something. This whole stretch of Austin St should be blyted by the city.

For an area to be blighted and condemned by the city, it is usually the location of extensive crime or drugs, or where most of the buildings have been neglected to an extreme, that they are at risk of collapsing. At no point in history has poor taste in architecture caused the city to designate the site as “blighted.” I agree, however, that Toys R Us or any future tenant should improve that artificial stucco or “styrofoam” facade, and reveal the original brick facade of the adjacent Barnes & Noble as a start. It would be great if the portion of Austin St west of Continental Ave, reflected the Tudor feel of the eastern portion of the retail and residential strip. It would be harmonious, rather than out of context.
