Twin Value Marketplace – Early Review

August 13, 2010 7 comments

I paid a visit to the new supermarket on Queens Blvd. this morning. Bottom line: they are going for a value grocery experience, as the name would suggest. The new store will compete with the nearby Key Food and other similar chains, not the likes of Natural or other organic grocers in our neighborhood, and certainly nothing like an upscale market. The place looks great, no surprise there. But it is nothing special if you are looking for a unique supermarket experience. I noticed several of the products say Associated and Key Food on the labels. So, overall, a nice addition to the neighborhood supermarket experience in terms of cleanliness and an enjoyable shopping experience, but that is to be expected given that it is brand new. If you live far away from the store, I really don’t see why you would make the extra trip unless the offerings you have near you are so dilapidated that you are desperate for a better supermarket experience. I will post photos in a little bit.

Healthy Local Lunching

The relatively new Organic Market on 71st Road has quickly become one of my favorite places to get a delicious, and healthy, lunch in Forest Hills. The place was even recently highlighted in Time Out magazine’s Queens Issue for its tasty fare. I excerpt from the article:

Ten things we love about Austin Street

5 Healthy wraps at Organic Market
This juice bar and deli is a hot spot for local lunchers looking for nonprocessed meals. A well-presented honey mustard and grilled chicken whole-wheat wrap with a side of couscous salad ($7) should fuel your shopping bender. 107-14 71st Rd between Austin St and Queens Blvd (718-575-0082)

I have found the sandwiches from Organic Market to be a cut above the rest in taste and quality. I am always impressed when an establishment finds a way to make something as simple as a sandwich so delicious that you want to keep coming back for more and more.

And, if you just want to pick up some healthier beverages or groceries, Organic Market has a well-stocked selection. It’s a smaller and faster alternative to Natural given the shorter lines.

Just Cute as a Button!

It’s enough to make a grown man squeal with delight! The Homefront store on Austin, located near the corner of 72nd Road, has gotten some recent attention regarding its exceedingly charming store windows. But just wait to you see what’s inside. Parents – you may want to cover the eyes of any youngsters as they have been known to react excitedly to such tasty treats.
