My top-notch sources report the new supermarket will open next Friday.

Mayonnaise Madness!!

So they can put a man on the moon, but they can’t create a freakin’ mayonnaise jar that you don’t have to run under hot water to open every time you take it out of the fridge?!

Gives a New Meaning to Craving

I love this display in the Duane Reade on 71st Continental. Emergency Chocolate! Now, is this just for that desperate craving or should we stock up on it for that overdue hurricane?

NY Falafel Bar – Part 2

August 4, 2010 1 comment

Had a falafel from NY Falafel Bar today for lunch. It was even better than I remember the last one being, the one I reviewed several weeks ago. I don’t know if they changed the recipe, but I would rate this one of the best falafels I have eaten in New York City, and I am not exaggerating. Personally, I prefer my falafel less spicy and the one’s NY Falafel Bar makes are not very spicy, and very nicely balanced by a large amount of delicious fillings and what seems to be freshly made pita.

I think it earns being added to my Recommended Restaurants page. Congratulations!

An Invitation to Tim

I saw on the Queens Central forums that the Twin Donut on 71st Continental might already be on its way out. The post said it was up for sale. Well, if it is, or even if it isn’t, I have a suggestion: my friend Timmy, as in Tim Hortons.

If you haven’t tried Tim Hortons then you don’t know what you’ve been missing. It has quickly skyrocketed to one of my favorite, albeit cheap, indulgences. It’s a Canadian chain that started to open stores here in NYC about a year or so ago.

All it took was one cup of their coffee–not high-end but absolutely delicious–with a Canadian Maple doughnut and I was hooked.

Tim, my friend, please find your way to Forest Hills! I hear there’s a Twin Donuts location that might be about to leave town! And if they aren’t, well, there are a bunch of other empty storefronts on Austin that would just love to have you!

Knish Emergency!

I am sitting here with the windows finally open in my apartment now that the horrendous heat has finally abated, all in an attempt to air out my apartment of the smell of mothballs that has invaded from my neighbors’ domiciles. And what should suddenly come temptingly wafting through the windows? The sweet, delicious scent of knishes! Now is that a genuine Forest Hills experience or what?

I want a damn knish and I want it now!

Time Out NY’s Queens Issue

So they give us some coverage, but not so much for our restaurants, which have really been improving in the past year or two! And what?! Tuscan Hills isn’t on the list?? Are they mad?! At least they mention Homefront’s fudge, which loyal readers will recall I found first! 😉

One thing I am glad about is that they give a much-deserved shout-out to the Kew Gardens Cinemas. What a great place.

A Little Charm on Austin

July 25, 2010 1 comment

Now this is what I call creative retailing and something we could use a lot more of on Austin.

The always cute Homefront store has decided to bring a little bit of a vacation feel to our main shopping strip this summer by playing up something its always had: fudge!

Why can’t other stores on Austin bring a little more quaint charm to their windows like Homefront has?

In case you’re not familiar with Homefront, it is located near the corner of 72nd Road.

Fresh From the Farm

Yes, it’s hot, but the more we march on down to the new Farmer’s Market on Metropolitan this summer, the more goodies the farmers will bring us from now until Saturday, November 20th, the last day they are in town before they take the winter off.

And just think how nice it will be to cook up your delicious Thanksgiving Dinner with all those fresh foods from these local farmers. The forecast calls for pie!

The Market will be at 101-15 Metropolitan Avenue, rain or shine, Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Nov. 20th.

If you are walking down 71st Avenue hang a right when you get to Metropolitan and you will see it tucked into a parking area on the north side of Metropolitan. It’s very close to 71st.

New Supermarket – Some Quick Thoughts

July 21, 2010 2 comments

Just some quick comments about the new Twin Value Marketplace:

  1. I like the look of the sign they put up. It’s appearance is inviting and refreshing (see my previous post for a photo if you haven’t already). Quite a change for what is a mostly rather dreary Queens Blvd.
  2. It should be interesting, if what I am hearing is true and Key Food owns this new supermarket,  to see just how the company will differentiate this new format from its namesake store just a few blocks away on 71st Road.
